Exercises for Diabetes - Recommended for Diabetes Patients

Physical activity refers to any movement that burns calories such as pushing a broom or vacuum cleaner, washing the car or working in the garden. Exercise involves a series of repeated movements aimed to strengthen your body. Both are needed for optimal health. Diabetics can make physical activity a part of their day by using the stairs instead of the elevator, throwing away the remote control and getting up to change the TV station, parking and walking as opposed to using the drive through and doing their own housework and gardening.

Inactive, healthy, non-obese women over 72 years of age were started in training programs of hard (80 percent of aerobic capacity), moderate (65 percent) and easy (50 percent). All three groups did the same amount of work, burning 300 calories per session. The intense group had a great improvement in their ability to use sugar and suppress fat formation, while the low intensity group had little benefit.

Exercises like jogging, swimming, fast walking and cycling are good for diabetics. These exercises help to keep cardiovascular system in good condition. These exercises should couple with stretching exercises as warming and cooling down exercises. A typical exercise session should consist of: 10 minutes of warming up exercise of stretching type; about 20-30 minutes of aerobic exercise and finally 5 minutes of cool down and stretching exercise.

Aalom Vilom (AV) - It is a breathing exercise of the single nostril. You begin with a minute of deep & slow breathing. Here your hands must rest on the knees. Also close the eyes. Keep the right nostril closed with the thumb and inhale through your left nostril. Then exhale through the right nostril as you keep the left nostril pressed with your middle fingers. Do this for at least 5 minutes. But stop when you feel tired.

Generally, diabetes and exercises have a compatible correlation. However, there are times that exercise is not applicable. If your blood sugar rose higher than your blood sugar level at the time that your diabetes was diagnosed, it would be better to temporarily suspend routine exercise and refer the matter to your doctor.

Aerobic exercises - Aerobic exercises require increased amount of oxygen for prolonged period of time. They are beneficial to both the respiratory and circulatory systems of the body. This involves prolonged, repetitive use of large muscles of the body, which increase the body’s need of oxygen. These aerobic exercises are brisk or fast walking, jogging, swimming, cycling and skipping. These exercises help improve cardiovascular fitness.

Cardiovascular exercises. These types of exercises are non-vigorous activities. Water aerobics and cycling are two options. Just three to four days per week of moderate-intensity exercise for 20-60 minutes will give you the energy and encouragement you need.
