Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is defined as a non-inflammatory disease of the digestive system characterized by abdominal pain, altered bowel habits consisting of diarrhea or constipation or both, and no pathologic change. Irritable bowel syndrome is the irritation of intestinal receptors that results in the functional disorder of the colon. Usually it occurs because of lactose and other sugars, fatty acid, alimentary agents, purgatives, infections caused by dysbacteriosis, etc.
Some IBS patients suffer from constipation, while others may have diarrhea. As IBS affects colon movements so either it becomes very difficult to pass the stool, or the colon spasms push the stool too fast. Many patients suffer from alternating diarrhea and constipation. Bloating is another common symptom of IBS. It refers to the building up of gas in intestines. The result is that the patient feels pressure in his or her abdomen.

The irritable bowel syndrome diet helps to alleviate the symptoms of IBS. It may not completely cure the condition but it will space the attacks out so they are not as frequent. One of the main things that need to be removed from your diet as much as possible is high fat foods. Fat causes a violent reaction in the colon which can cause either constipation or violent diarrhea.
Take meals at regular intervals if you are following an IBS diet. This is because IBS mainly is caused by abnormalities in the intestinal tract and/or the colon. When you eat at the same time every day, your body and thereby your intestine and colon will get used to the schedule and would help regularize bowel movement. Once bowel movement is regularized and intestinal muscles are strengthened, this Irritable Bowel Syndrome ceases.
